The Evolution of Cancer Therapy

Lecture

This lecture presents an overview of the history of cancer therapy. Recent approaches and concepts studied in the field of biomedical engineering are presented. Specifically, present-day clinical trials that aim to harness the body’s own immune system to eliminate disease are described.

The Evolution of Cancer Therapy

A lecture presented by Professor Eleanor Stride at the Gresham College Lecture Series

Professor Stride discusses the history and development of cancer therapy from its origins in Ancient Egypt - when surgery was the only option to remove a tumour, to the more recent developments of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. She will end by looking at present-day clinical trials that aim to harness the body’s own immune system to eliminate disease (immunotherapy).

Why is this important?

Drawing on the body's own immune system can help us improve the effectiveness of how cancers are treated.
